 Italy

Bright blue skies and golden light are what draws so many artists to paint
the vibrant Italian landscape. Add to that the mystery and charm of the ancient architecture and you have all the ingredients for producing some wonderful paintings.

“SUNRISE IN CELANO”
Oil on Canvas
20” x 26”
$2,200

This outstanding castle in the center of the village of Celano guarded the
mountain pass against marauders from the valley below in ancient times.
The magical quality of this fortress as it glows in the early morning and evening light
provided the inspiration for several of my paintings.

“SUNSET IN CELANO”
Oil on Canvas
16” x 20”
$1,000

“THE ENCHANTED CASTLE”
Oil on Canvas
16” x 22”
$1,750

“MOUNTAIN VILLAGE”
Rocca Di Cambio
Oil on Canvas
18” x 24”
$1,600

This was one of many red-roofed hill villages that captured my imagination
during a summer holiday. The long, dry grasses of the golden fields hummed with the song of cicadas as I sketched the preliminary drawing for this painting under the hot, August sun.

“WAITING PATIENTLY”
Ovindoli
Oil on Canvas
16” x 20”
$1,000

One of the Abruzzo region hill towns, Ovindoli shares that timeless quality that so
appeals to me as a painter. Here, I came upon this young woman sitting on the doorstep
of a centuries old dwelling, chatting calmly on her mobile phone until her boyfriend
showed up on his Vespa to drive her away down the old, cobbled streets.

“CONTEMPLATION”
Rocca Di Mezzo
Oil on Canvas
18” x 24”
$1,950

I felt like I had intruded upon the subject of this painting, who appeared to be deep
in contemplation as he sat on the steps between the houses. Perhaps he was waiting
for a friend, or maybe just resting after the steep walk up from the village center in the
afternoon heat. i took an unobserved snapshot and painted the scene later in my studio.

“FUTURE CHAMPION”
Rocca Di Mezz0
Oil on Canvas
11” x 14”
$500

Italians are football (or soccer, as we like to call it) crazy, and the youngsters, sporting
the jerseys of their favorite teams, can be found practicing their footwork with the ball in
the streets and playgrounds of every town and city in the country. This budding star
from Rocca Di Mezzo is a Roma fan by the color of his shirt.

“STRAY CATS”
Rocca Di Mezzo
Oil On Canvas
9” x 12”
$500

Everywhere I’ve ever traveled in Italy there have been an abundance of stray cats roaming around. These two felines regarded me impassively from their doorstep in the village
of Rocca Di Mezzo as I made a quick sketch and took their photo. They may have
belonged to the owner of the house, but they looked pretty rough to me, especially
the scruffy fellow on the left.

“THE ARCH”
Rocca Di Mezzo
Oil on Canvas
9” x 12”
$600

An old monument in the center of Rocca Di Mezzo, the origins of which I’m unsure,
framed these two local ladies as they headed home from their daily shopping.

“LEFT BEHIND”
Rocca Di Mezzo
Oil on Canvas
11” x 14”
$750

I do like to include animals in my paintings, and this old boy, watching forlornly
as his master goes to town without him, was too good to miss.

“THE RED DOOR”
Rocca Di Mezzo
Oil on Canvas
SOLD
Limited Edition Prints: 16” x 20” Unframed $180

“SLEEPY SUMMER AFTERNOON”
Rocca Di Mezzo
Oil on Canvas
20” x 26”
$2,000

I frequently went out exploring in the hot summer afternoons when all the Italians,
including my family members, were sensibly taking their siesta. The mountains made
a great backdrop to this view down one of the village streets. You could see the heat
shimmering off the rooftops as they baked in the sizzling sun.

“THE SECRET DOOR”
Rocca Di Mezzo
Oil on Canvas
18” x 24”
$1,950

Around many twisting corners and up a steep, narrow alleyway, I found this beautiful
 wooden door. It looked rather grand and mysterious to me for such an out-of-the-way place;
so easy to fantasize about what it leads to and the lives of those who live behind it.

“TIME FOR ESPRESSO”
Rome
Oil on Canvas
16” x 20”
$1,400

Starbucks definitely got the idea from the Italians! This coffee bar in Rome, like others
all over the country, is where Italians meet to discuss everything. I loved the way the light
shone on these two gentlemen and reflected off the row of motorbikes behind them.

“SUMMER IN VENICE”
Oil on Canvas
10” x 14”
$650

Venice is a painter’s dream and most of the artists who have ever been there have been captivated by the play of light reflecting up from the water in the canals. With this painting
I hoped to capture a bit of the magic of this wonderful city.

Near Rocca Di Cambio
